Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is a significant health problem that needs lifetime responsibility. Family members play an essential role in managing and treating the elderly. The purpose of this study is to determine and explore the challenges of the primary caregivers who are caring for the elderly with debilitating effects of diabetes mellitus. This study utilized a qualitative exploratory research design that focused on gaining insights into how the ten informants went about their day with an elderly with diabetes mellitus. A thematic analysis will be the method of scrutinizing the data. It explored the stories of the ten informants from the Municipality of Asturias Cebu. The questions asked were their understanding of diabetes mellitus, their thoughts on the diagnosis of the elderly, their challenges, how it affects their quality care, and their coping mechanisms. The common themes have been extracted were: The strain of caring for an unfamiliar disease; The burden of money; Difficulty in controlling diet regimen: Concerns about the complicating symptoms of the disease; Disappointment due to patient's lack of cooperation; A dire need for support on the draining resources, and anxiety caused by constant confrontations. It is undeniably true that challenges are inevitable, affecting the caregiver emotionally, mentally, and financially.
