"Engineering students are commonly stressed with their demanding coursework, While stress is responded to in different ways, optimism is considered a helpful characteristic that manages academic stress. The aim of the study is to determine the relationship between the level of academic stress and level of optimism among the engineering students of University of Cebu-Banilad as the basis for creating an intervention program to enhance students' stress management and level of optimism.
Utilizing a descriptive-correlational design, data were collected from 176 students enrolled in Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering through modified questionnaires assessing their levels of academic stress and optimism.
The findings reveal that students experience a balanced level of academic stress, indicating that while they face challenges, they do not perceive these as overwhelmingly negative. Concurrently, students exhibit a moderate level of optimism, reflecting their belief in their ability to succeed academically. A significant negative correlation was identified between academic stress and optimism, suggesting that higher levels of optimism are associated with lower levels of stress. These results underscore the importance of fostering optimism among engineering students as a means to enhance their resilience and coping strategies in the face of academic challenges.
