"in this fourth edition, we have introduced full numbering of section and of examples to make it easier to refer to them in the text. This also makes it more straightforward to point to other sections that may help readers understand a point made, or to alert them to the fact that we expand on something later in the book. The tree structures have been radically changed to make the step from this book to formal syntactic theory easier. The distinction between texical and functional categories has been introduced, and more attention is paid to the role functional features play. We are grateful to Cindy Schneider, Andrew Feeney and one anonymous reader whose comments have greatly helped us understand how to improve the text - any remaining flaws are of course ours. We also want to thank clearly and effectively. It goes without saying that this textbook owed much to our students, who helped us see things more clearly - and state them more clearly. too.
