"Practical Business Psychology, Third Edition, adheres faithfully to the original objective of the first edition published in 1951. It strives to give the reader a summary of modern psychology that is interesting and read. able in a form that can be readily applied to help him become a more efficient worker and a more effective leader.
Because the book has become widely used for business training, both in schools and within industry, most of the changes in the present re vision have been in details that will make it an easier book to teach, and also more adapted to self-instruction or home study.
Most of the material about the technical methods used by psychologists has been dropped. The book is now aimed directly toward orienting the reader to the human problems he will encounter and the personal adjustments he will likely need to make to get ahead and be happy in modern business life. In a sense, this is a "success book," but with a difference-how to organize your life for a career in business by applying some research findings about human nature in business life.
This book emphasizes principles, or rules, which the employee or employer can put to practical use, whether on an assembly-line job or at the big desk in the front office. The examples and applications deal mostly with white-collar work and with large firms where the majority of people are employed. Both the "why" and the "how to" are considered.
To make it easier to grasp and apply the principles, there has been a major revision in the aids for teaching and studying the book. For in-stance, some thirty cartoons and other visual aids have been added. Most of these give a concise summary of pertinent research findings, without burdening the reader with details about the research methods and design. Review questions, "The Gist of the Chapter," have been added to guide home study and also to help class recitations.
There has been some rearrangement of sections to make fuller use of the "spiral treatment" by which topics are developed in easy-to-comprehend steps. This spiral treatment also provides an automatic review, which should make it easier to remember the basic points." —Preface
