Summary: Reading comprehension is one of the major problems in the Philippine Education in where students have difficulty in comprehending what they are reading. So this study assessed the extent of students reading comprehension skills such as scanning, skimming, locating main ideas, understanding references, making inferences, logical thinking and context clues in crafting an intervention to address the gaps on these skills. This study utilized the descriptive-comparative design. A researcher made questionnaire was used as a tool in gathering data from the chosen participants in Apas National High School. There were nine sections and to get the participants of the study, cluster method by lottery was applied. The same questionnaire was used during pre-test and post-test. Majority of the participants were from aged thirteen to fourteen years old and majority of the participants wee male. For the pre-test result, 70 % of the participants got an average score which is equivalent to 52.50% of the participants. The pre-test result had no significant relaionship between the profile and the reading performance. While the post- test result, it showed a significant relationship between the gender of the participants and their reading performance. Lastly, the paired T-test result showed a significant difference from the result of the pre-test and post-test since the p-value is less than 0.001. Therefore, conducting a modular instruction in teaching the reading skills will help the students improve their reading comprehension which is effective if introduced as a first year and must be maintained until the students will graduate for consistency of the results.
