Summary:This study aimed to assess the competency level in performing APGAR scoring among nursing students who had been exposed in birthing homes and Lying-in clinics. This study seeks to answer the following questions: What is the profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, year level, and number of exposure to delivery room?What are the respondents' scoring skills in assessing the newborn babies in terms of appearance, pulse, grimace, activity and respiration's? Is there any significant relationship between the respondents' profile and their APGAR scoring skills?<br/><br/>The researcher used a quantitative descriptive type of method which summarizes the level of competency among the respondents. The level II, III &IV nursing students located in University of Cebu- Banilad Campus, Banilad Cebu City. The necessary data were obtained through a researcher- made questionnaire. The researchers made a transmittal letter addressed to the dean of University of Cebu- College of Nursing and to the level chairmen to ask permission to conduct a study among the level II, III, &IV nursing student. A pilot was conducted . Fifty questionnaires were distributed to test the reliability and validity of the research instruments.<br/><br/>Majority of the respondents belong to the young adulthood stage, with ages ranging from 15-28 years old, 266 in frequency with a percentage of 98.52, which implies that there are more younger nursing student studying in University of Cebu- Banilad. Most of our respondents are female than male studying in the university. All of the respondents are proficient most of the time when supervised and requires frequent verbal and physical directives in performing APGAR scoring, with a general weighted mean of 2.96.<br/> There is no significant relationship between the respondents gender, year level, and frequency of exposure to delivery room and their APGAR scoring skills,which implies that the respondents' profile do not influence the APGAR scoring skills in birthing homes and lying-in clinics. And there is a significant relationship between the respondents' age and their APGAR scoring skills, which implies that age differences influence the APGAR scoring skills in birthing homes and lying-in clinics.<br/><br/>In the light of the findings in the study, the researchers conclude that all respondents are proficient most of the time when supervised and requires frequent verbal and occasional physical directives in assessing the newborn babies in terms of appearance,pulse, grimace, activity and respiration's.<br/><br/>Based on the findings, the following recommendations are addressed to; (1.) The nursing students. They should strive harder to become more independent and efficient in performing APGAR scoring with minimal supervision, verbal and physical directives from the clinical instructor. They should lend some time for reading since most of the steps in APGAR scoring were based in theories and concepts for instance in the maternal and child nursing. They should take every opportunity to perform APGAR scoring in order to polish their knowledge and skills in performing the procedure; thus, making themselves more independent in the clinical area. Students should bear in mind that APGAR scoring as part of newborn assessment need to be practice frequently and solely in order to master and would aid in future evaluations.(2) The clinical Instructors. The researchers recommend them to further motivate the students in performing APGAR scoring. They teach students the proper way to perform APGAR scoring if ever the student is not yet proficient in performing the procedure. This would serve as reinforcement to the students' knowledge and skills in the procedure. (3.) The researchers recommend to further implement a theoretical discussion of APGAR scoring during lectures. The researchers also recommend having the APGAR scoring be included in the return demonstration of newborn care to increase the students' awareness and skills in such procedure.(4.) The affiliating Agencies. The researchers recommend allowing the students to perform APGAR scoring in their institution. This is to increase the students' exposure to the procedure thus increasing the students' experience, knowledge and awareness of the procedure. |
