Summary, etc Abstract: This research focused on the effect of type of family relations and the quality of life among elderlies in selected nursing homes in Cebu. The researchers believed that family abandonment affects the quality of life among elderlies regarding health, safety and security, income security, life satisfaction, and family separation. It allows the caregivers and family members to give importance to an elderly's quality of life, its components, and adhering to their needs in the facilities.
This study utilized a researcher-made questionnaire. This study used the quantitative descriptive method in the collection of data from the response of the respondents. The data gathered were statistically treated using the percentage distribution method, weighted mean, and the Chi-square test to statistically find out the significant relationship between the profile of the respondents and their perceived meaning of quality of life. The results of the data gathered shows that many elderlies are comfortable, feeling safe and secured in the facility. However, they indicated that they are alone, socially isolated, abandoned, and separated by their loved ones. Some of them revealed that separation from family members greatly affects the overall quality of life among elderlies in selected nursing homes. Majority of the elderlies were rarely been visited by family and were not happy even though they were admitted in secured facilities. Proposed action plan were made to minimize the events of family abandonment. On the contrary, a number of them promotes self-independence, sense of belongingness, and engage participation on group activities. This has indicated that elderlies have improved the quality of life and finally cope up in the problems in the nursing homes.
The families will realize their decision and the elderly's feelings in the nursing homes and identify how elderlies cope in the new environment. Families will be to identify the associated factors that could interfere with the quality of life elderlies in the nursing homes maintaining the health of the elderly, autonomy as long as possible, increasing social participation, and becoming aware of their quality of life and factors that influence their growth and its importance to their health.
