Summary, etc |
"The key to understand about emotional intelligence is that people who have high levels of it are very self-aware and integrate emotional information (how they feel about something) into their decision-making processes. Emotional intelligence is not letting yourself being ruled by your emotions. Quite to the contary, it is about using emotion smartly. An emotionally savvy and intelligent leader is also able to build stronger teams by strategically utilizing the emotional diversity of their team members to benefit the team as a whole. Emotional intelligence is still not completely understood, but what we do know is that emotions play a very critical role in the overall quality of our personal and professional lives, more critical even than our actual measure of brain intelligence. Emotions convey information happiness usually indicates a desire to join with other people; anger indicates a desire to attack or harm others; fear indicate desire to escape, and so forth. Each emotion conveys its own pattern of possible messages, and actions associated with those messages. A message of anger, for example, may mean that the individual feels treated unfairly. The anger, in turn, might be associated with specific sets of possible actions: peacemaking, retribution and revenge-seeking." --backcover |
