"K-9 units play a crucial role in contraband detection due to their exceptional sense of smell and specialized training abilities. They are effectively able to identify illicit materials, such as explosives or drugs, that may evade human detection techniques. Their presence enhances security measures and contributes to a safer environment for both employees and customers. K-9s work exceptionally well in crowded places because they can cover significant areas fast, making them very useful in crowded places like malls. Their use also deters criminal conduct and adds to overall security tactics by supplementing existing technologies and manpower.<br/><br/>This study employed a qualitative research design, utilizing a semi-structured interview guide, to explore the experiences of K-9 units in detecting contraband from the perspectives of law enforcement officers and K-9 handlers. This study is conducted at various SM Malls in Cebu, specifically SM City Cebu and SM Seaside Cebu. At least five (5) informants or participants of K-9 handlers in the various SM Malls in Cebu.<br/><br/>The findings revealed the experiences of K-9 handlers in contraband detection, which were categorized into three parts: Training and Preparation, The Emotional and Physiological impact, and Challenges in Detection. The sub-themes indicate the experiences of K-9 handlers in contraband detection at SM Mall in Cebu; Physical and Mental Conditioning, Bonding Phase, Pressure of High-Stakes Operation, Exposure to High-Stress Environment, Exposure to Threats, and Health Risk and Dangerous Encounters, Work-Life Balance and Limited Resources. The second finding answered the coping mechanism of K-9 handlers in contraband detection at SM Mall Cebu emanated two sub-themes: Building Resilience through Training and Adaptation, and Strengthening the Handler-Canine Bond. This highlights the unique challenges and opportunities in their roles as K-9 handlers as well as the critical role of the K-9 handler unit in ensuring mall security and safety, with their ability to detect contraband, is indispensable." |
