"Medical students are among the populations most likely to experience some form of musculoskeletal disorders due to the highly sedentary nature of their education. Back and neck pain are the regions of the body in which musculoskeletal disorders are frequently reported. These are often linked to prolonged sitting postures, compounded upon by poor posture and poor ergonomics. This may negatively impact academic performance and quality of life due to reduced concentration among other negative effects. This is a cross-sectional study with a total of 103 respondents among first and second year students from University of Cebu - School of Medicine of the A.Y. 2024-2025. Online questionnaires were administered to determine factors influencing back and neck pain among these students. The factors which were observed were demographics, BMI, hours of prolonged sitting, levels and functional impact of back and neck pain. Findings showed that students reported mild to moderate amounts of neck pain (18.45%) and back pain (16.50%). In terms of functional impact of neck pain, mild disability was reported in the following domains: reading, headaches and concentration with weighted means of (1.06), (1.09), and (1.00) respectively. For functional impact of back pain, moderate impacts to comfort (87.38%), rest patterns, and physical pain (52.43%) were observed. This was especially noted in those that have persistent pain and were classified as having a high level of disability due to back pain amounting to 33.01% of the population. Students were often exposed to moderate (62.14%) to long (24.27%) sitting duration which was the only factor that showed moderate association to back pain with a Cramer's V value of 0.044. Based on the results, prolonged sitting position is a factor associated with the development of back pain. Measures such as scheduled breaks, ergonomics, education, and regular physical activity may be beneficial in the reduction of back pain among medical students. While institutional measures such as curriculum scheduling and provision of ergonomic facilities may lessen the instances of back pain involving medical studies." --Abstract |
