"The journey to medical school is frequently perceived as challenging, requiring determination, strong will, and a lasting belief in one’s abilities. Confidence in one’s self of self-efficacy plays a vital role in managing the demanding coursework of medical school, impacting a student’s capacity to adapt, persist, and excel in high-pressure environments (Shores & Shannon, 2007; Fast el al., 2010). It is crucial to comprehend the elements that shape self-efficacy in medical students, as this provides valuable insights into academic resilience and career motivation.<br/><br/>In the Philippines, where familial ties typically influence professional trajectories, the role of family background in shaping students’ medical school experiences is an intriguing area of study. Students who have close family connections to the field may have the opportunity to benefit from informal mentorship, resources, and an understanding of the demands of the field. This could potentially support their adjustment to medical school and increase their confidence. In contrast, first-generation medical students who lack such connections may face a unique set of circumstances, navigating the field primarily on their own. This distinction raises concerns regarding the extent to which self-efficacy and the overall educational experience in medical school are influenced by family history.<br/><br/>Although comparisons have been made among medical students of different family backgrounds, there is a knowledge gap in examining its effect on self-efficacy among medical students in the Philippines. The study aims to address this gap by comparing self-efficacy levels between medical students with familial ties to the medical profession and those who are the first in their families to embark on this career path. This study will employ a three-part tool, developed by the researchers, to measure self-efficacy, focusing on medical students’ confidence in managing challenging situations at the university of Cebu School of Medicine. The tool has been validated through expert review and further refined through a pilot study conducted by the researchers to ensure its accuracy." --Background of the study |
