"Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) remains a major global public health concern, with rising incidence among young adults and populations engaged in international mobility, including future seafarers. This Philippines, as one of the world’s largest suppliers of maritime professionals, faces unique challenges related to HIV awareness among maritime students who are likely to work in international settings. This study aimed to determine the impact of social media on HIV awareness among third-year Marine Engineering students at the University of Cebu-Maritime Education and Training Center (UC-METC). A cross-sectional survey design was employed involving 117 eligible respondents selected through random sampling. Data were collected using two validated online questionnaires: a preliminary survey assessing patterns and purposes of social media use, and an HIV knowledge questionnaire covering transmission, prevention, asymptomatic carriers, and treatment. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results showed that social media was perceived as a useful learning tool by the majority of respondents, particularly for social and educational purposes. Overall, HIV knowledge among participants was satisfactory, especially regarding modes of transmission and preventive measures, although gaps persisted in misconceptions related to hygiene and post-exposure practices. Regression analysis revealed that the use of social media for social purposes was statistically significant predictor of HIV knowledge, indicating that informal online interactions play a crucial role in the dissemination of information." --Abstract |
