Summary, etc "Self-medication (SM) is the act of consuming medicine on personal discretion, without prior consent of a medical professional. This study investigated the knowledge, attitude, and practices of poor-to low-income residents in Barangay Tipolo, Mandaue City. Simple random technique was utilized in this study, but convenience sampling was utilized when selected respondents were absent. Face-to-face questionnaire-guided interviews were employed using the local dialect to ensure better communication. Independent t-test and one-way analysis of variances were utilized for two-group and three-group comparisons, respectively. Results showed 91% of them reported to self-medicate. Demographics associated with higher tendency to self-medicate include: older age, male gender, being married or having insurance that lacked treatment coverage, and having no chronic diseases; although no statistical significance was found (p>0.05). This study showed that the sampled community were generally knowledgeable of SM prior to the research. More than half are aware of the potential side-effects like nausea, stomach problems, kidney complications and allergic reactions. Attitudes section of the study reports general disagreement to SM while admitting that they self-meditate about 2-3 times a year. Antipyretics, painkillers, and vitamins were drugs mostly used, coinciding with fever, headache, and flu/cough/colds as illnesses indicated for SM. Influencing factors include having minor illnesses, previous experience of similar illness, the need for quick relief, and confidence in knowledge of drugs were top contributing factors. Finally, respondents rely the most on pharmacists or employees of pharmacies for information, followed by friends and colleagues in healthcare, previous prescriptions, and advertisements. With the high SM prevalence noted with OTC drugs and antibiotics, investigation must be done on the laws and regulations controlling drug distribution. Furthermore, this study calls on the need for universal access to healthcare in efforts to decrease SM prevalence, preventing serious consequences like antibiotic resistance." --Abstract
