"Sexually transmitted infections (STI) and diseases (STDs), particularly Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), were a significant concern in the Philippines for several years. They were burdens to further health problems such as infertility, acute illnesses, disabilities, cancer, and death, along with psychological consequences for men, women, and children (Guevara et al., 2010).<br/><br/>According to UNAIDS (2023) global statistics, there were 39 million people living with HIV worldwide, with 1.3 million newly infected patients in 2022. The HIV epidemic could also be observed in the United States, South Africa, and Southeast Asia (Alinder, 2020; HIV.gov, 2023; World Health Organization, 2023b). In the Philippines, the HIV pandemic continued to climb, with a 411% daily increase in the incidence rate from the years 2012-2023 (Gangcangco & Eustaquio, 2023).<br/><br/>Several factors could predispose a person to the transmission of STDs and STIs. In the United States of America, the diagnosis of HIV was high among the age group of 13-24 years (Koenig et al., 2016). Similarly, there was a high HIV prevalence among ages 15-49 in ASEAN member states (Pendse et al., 2016). In the Philippines, Gangcangco & Eustaquio (2023) reported that in 2020-2021, more than 20,000 patients were diagnosed at age 15 and above. Aside from age, sharing of needles, alcohol use, intercourse without protection, and receptive anal or vaginal intercourse predisposed to a heightened increase in disease transmission (International Association of Providers of AIDS Care, 2021; World Health Organization, 2023b). Risky sexual contact and injection of drugs constituted 90% of the HIV transmissions recorded in Cebu City as sourced from a joint advocacy briefing between the WHO, the Philippine DOH, and the Cebu City DOH dated last 2008 (Abellanosa-Tac-an, Belimac, &Pengfei, 2012).<br/><br/>The Maritime Industry was a highly sought-after career path in the Philippines. In 2022 alone, nearly half a million Filipino sailors were deployed worldwide as part of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) workforce (Paunan, 2023). The dominance of the maritime industry was among the well-known college degrees for students who aspired to obtain higher salary range abroad. As of the year 2018-2019, Maritime ranked as the 9th discipline with the most enrollees (Laguador, 2019). However, a long-standing problem with seafarers was their link to STI/STDs. Past research on knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) suggested that Filipino seafarers demonstrated risky sexual practices such as having multiple sexual partners, engagement with sex workers, and inconsistent condom use (Guevara et al., 2010)." --Introduction |
