"Social support is a vital resource for students in coping with academic demands and personal challenges. Nursing students are particularly vulnerable, as they experience higher levels of academic burnout compared to students in other health professions. Recognizing the importance of social support in mitigating burnout, this study aims to determine the relationship between perceived social support and academic burnout among nursing students at the University of Cebu Banilad. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following problems; the level of perceived social support of the participants, the level of academic burnout experienced by participants, is there a significant relationship between the level of perceived social support and academic burnout among participants and the type of guidance program developed to address the identified issues.<br/><br/>A descriptive-correlational research design is employed to achieve this objective. To ensure a representative sample, a purposive sampling method is used, with 302 first-year nursing students selected based on Slovin's formula. The study is conducted at the University of Cebu Banilad, where data are collected through research-made questionnaires, each consisting of 10 items rated on a 4-point Likert scale designed to measure the students' perceived social support and their levels of academic burnout. The data collection was conducted in person, beginning with the distribution and signing of informed consent forms explaining the purpose of the study and the rights of the participants. The participants were given 20-30 minutes to complete the survey, and the data were then analyzed using weighted mean and Pearson correlation to determine the relationship between the two variables. Moreover, the data were kept confidential following data protection protocols.<br/><br/>The results revealed high levels of both perceived social support (x = 2.78) and academic burnout (X = 3.05). Moreover, a weak negative correlation was found between perceived social support and academic burnout (r = -0.139, p=0.012). Since the p-value is less than 0.05, the null hypothesis was rejected, indicating a significant relationship between perceived social support and academic burnout. The findings suggest that nursing students at the University of Cebu Banilad who perceive greater social support tend to experience lower levels of academic burnout. However, the weak correlation observed suggests that while social support is beneficial, it is not the primary factor influencing burnout. Other variables such as academic workload, coping mechanisms, and personal resilience may also significantly contribute. This implies that while social support should be encouraged, it must be part of a broader, more holistic approach to addressing academic burnout. Hence, a proposed guidance program for nursing students in the University of Cebu-Banilad Campus was created." —Abstract |
