"General Biology 1 provides a general understanding of what modern biology is all about, highlighting the importance of chemistry and physics in living systems. Foundational concepts and principles that are central in understanding the importance of energy and molecules to cellular processes are widely covered in this book.<br/><br/>Reading the book might be a challenge for some students because of the interdisciplinary nature of the topics. To address this challenge, this book is organized in such a way that the essential background material is presented to allow students to process it on their own.<br/><br/>Unit 1 presents the cell, the basic functional unit of life. It covers cell types, cell structures and their functions, as well as how the processes of transport into and out of the cell take place. The discussion on cell division includes mitosis and meiosis, with emphasis on its importance in the growth and development of an organism. A discussion on the basics of how cancer cells operate is also included.<br/><br/>Unit 2 deals with matter, focusing on the nature of atoms and chemical bonding. Also covered in this unit are the characteristics and functions of the molecules of life: carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids, and fats and lipids. This unit provides a chemical basis for the cellular processes necessary in the survival of organisms.<br/><br/>Unit 3 is about the energy of life. It discusses how plants and other photosynthetic organisms produce their food. It also covers the process of cellular respiration and the chemical reactions involved in transforming the energy in food into other forms.<br/><br/>The use of illustrations, SCITRIVIA, and laboratory activities complements the development of ideas in the text. Other pedagogical aids include the lesson summary, chapter summary, chapter tests, glossary, "connect" across sciences, and references cited.<br/><br/>General Biology 1 is K to 12 compliant. The content standards, performance tasks, and competencies required by DepED for senior high school students are well covered in each lesson.<br/><br/>This book aims to produce a balanced and up-to-date treatment of all the topics covered, as it underscores clarity of exposition of ideas to help students, as well as teachers, grasp the basic concepts.<br/><br/>It is the hope of the author that students and teachers alike will find value in reading this book." —Preface |
