"The focus of this book is the history of modern psychology, that period beginning in the late 19th century when psychology became a separate, independent discipline.<br/>Although we do not ignore earlier philosophical thought, we concentrate on that which relates directly to the establishment of psychology as a new and distinct field of study. We are presenting a history of modern psychology, not of psychology and all the philosophical work that preceded it.<br/>We recount the history of psychology in terms of its great ideas and schools of thought. Since the formal beginning of the field in 1879, psychology has been defined in a variety of ways as new ideas have captured the loyalty of adherents and have come, for a time, to dominate the field. Our interest, then, is in the developing sequence of ideas that has defined psychology's subject matter, methods, and goals.<br/>Each of the schools of thought is discussed as a movement growing out of its historical context and not as an independent or isolated entity. Contextual forces include not only the intellectual spirit of the times (the Zeitgeist) but also social, political, and economic factors." —Preface |
