Summary, etc Summary: Group dynamics are used during the discussion to improve students performance in mathematics. This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of group dynamics to students performances in solving the volume and surface area of prisms and pyramids. These mathematics concepts were the focus of the study as students often induce misconceptions on this topic.
This research was being conducted at University of Cebu- Banilad campus. The participants of this study were forty-six third year Bachelor of Elementary Education students enrolled in Math 15 during the first semester of school year 2017-2018. The research participants were divided equally into two groups namely the controlled group and the experimental group. Students were selected using cluster sampling technique. The experimental group was taught using group dynamics in learning the volume and surface area of prism and pyramid. On the other hand, the controlled group dealt with volume and surface area of prism and pyramid though conventional classroom procedures. Pretest and posttest were being conducted to both groups before and after the intervention.
The findings revealed that the profile of the participants under controlled and experimental group regarding age, the majority of them were 18 years old, as to gender, the majority of the participants were females. Lastly, as to the type of secondary school graduated, the majority of the participants have graduated in public schools. The performances of both controlled and experimental groups in both pretest and posttest of the controlled and experimental groups. This implied that, although the performances were inferior, there was a valuable increase in the fullfillment of the experimental group upon using group dynamics. Thus, applying group dynamics in solving the volume and surface area of prism and pyramid was effective.
