Summary, etc Summary: Problem-solving techniques are taught in different countries to find uncomplicated solutions to word problems in mathematics. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the problem-solving procedures in the selected topics in elementary algebra. The researchers tried to find the profile of the participants regarding of the type of secondary school they graduated from and the monthly income of their parents. Pre-test and post-test as well as the significant relationship of the participants profile and their performance were also investigated. Furthermore, the significant difference in the participants performances in the pre-test and post-test were also explored. The researchers planned to conduct seminar regarding problem-solving techniques in the University of Cebu to help enhance the students problem solving skills.
The researchers made use of the quasi-experimental design in determining the effectiveness of the techniques. The study occurred in the College of Teacher Education at University of Cebu- Banilad campus. The participants of the study were the 33 BEED-3 students. Simple percent was computed to uncover the profile of participants. Inferential statistics like chi-square test of independence was utilized to determine the significant relationship between the participants profile and their pre-test and post-test scores of the selected topics in Elementary algebra taught using four different problem-solving techniques. Moreover, paired test was used to determine the significant difference between the participants performances in their pre-test and post-test scores of the selected topics in elementary algebra.
The research outcomes revealed that most of the participants graduated from public school. Most of their parents income ranges from 0-5000 pesos per month. Majority of the participants failed during pre-test but have gained an increase in their post-test. The results showed that there is no significant relationship between the participants profile regarding the type of secondary school they graduated, parents monthly income and their performance during their pre-test and post-test.
The researchers concluded that the techniques used in solving word problems in elementary algebra are efficient since the participants pre-test ans post-test scores differed significantly.
