Summary: Forceps are metal instruments that may be used during normal labor to extract fetus from the birth canal. The use of low or outlet forceps for this purpose is so common where it is used to shorten the second stage of labor, prevents excessive pounding of the fetal head against the perineum, prevents exhaustion from the woman's pushing effort and can speed delivery in the event of fetal distress. |
