"In today's modern society, modern problems cannot necessarily be solved with modern solutions alone. Canines have been involved in modern policing since the Middle Ages, commonly used for patrol duties, officer protection, suspect apprehension, and most importantly, area security. K-9 units are considered irreplaceable in contraband detection and human trail tracing, mainly due to their scent-detection capabilities. However, there are still nuanced questions about its efficacy and role in contraband detection.

This study highlights and explores the experiences of K-9 units at Ayala malls in Cebu. In addition, this study employed a qualitative descriptive phenomenological research design, utilizing a researcher-designed approach involving seven K-9 Handlers.

The study is conducted at two (2) Ayala Malls in Cebu, specifically Ayala Center Cebu and Ayala Central Bloc. This study aims to explore the experiences of K-9 units in detecting contraband from the perspectives of K-9 handlers and security officers.

The themes created to the first problem referring to the experiences of K-Handlers in detecting contraband at Ayala Malls were the following. A. Contrabands - 11 What kind of contrabands these K-9 units detected in this mall, the responses are: No Contrabands and Light Things, 2) When you detect any contraband along with your dog. what do you do, the responses are: Support and Document, Secure the Area, Report to Proper Authority, and Small things, 3) When you can detect any contraband, what do you feel, the responses are, Professionalism, Positive Emotional Reaction, Negative Emotional Reaction and Calm Alert, 4) Do you record in your system every time these K-9 units detect contrabands? How do you record these incidents, the responses are Record and Documentation, Confidential, 5) What are the challenges you encounter as a K-9 handler, the responses are: Cooperation, Big events, Contaminated and Stress: 6) How about the environmental or work field challenges, the responses are: Weather, No challenges, Disobedience, Big events, and Dangerous Substance; B. Ammunition - 1) How do K-9 dogs detect illicit ammunition, the responses are: Sniffing and Behavior Smell; 2) What are the common behaviors of dogs whenever they detected illicit ammunition, the responses are: Sit down, Aggressive Barking and Smell Bark: 3) How do you feel or react whenever your K9 dog detects ammunition, the responses are: Positive Emotional Reaction, Negative Emotional Reaction and Calm Focus; C Explosive - 1) How do K-9 dogs detect Illicit Explosive, the responses are: Sniffing and Behavior Smell; 2) What are the common behaviors of dogs whenever they detected illicit Explosive, the responses are: Sit down, Aggressive Barking and Smell Bark; 3) How do you feel or react whenever your K9 dog detects Explosive, the responses are: Positive Emotional Reaction, Negative Emotional Reaction and Calm Focus; D. Drugs - 1) How do K-9 dogs detect Illicit Drugs, the responses are: Sniffing and Behavior Smell; 2) What are the common behaviors of dogs whenever they detected illicit Drugs, the responses are: Sit down, Aggressive Barking and Smell Bark; 3) How do you feel or react whenever your K9 dog detects Drugs, the responses are: Positive Emotional Reaction, Negative Emotional Reaction and Calm Focus. The themes established regarding the Coping Mechanisms of K-9 Handlers' Experiences were as follows: 1) How do you cope with the challenges you encounter in handling? The responses are: Patience, Calmness, Patience and Focus, and Focus and Alert."
