"Our Approach
Our textbook is unique because it presents, in each chapter, two parallel approaches to management, with a focus on helping readers think about how management is linked with important issues that they will be facing in their careers (e.g., ecological sustainability, teamwork, globalization, corporate social responsiblity), and on enabling them to consider how their personal values can inform what sort of manager they want to become. Much of the content is similar to what is found in other management textbooks, but other content will be, we hope, refreshingly novel in discussing management practices that are guided by a contrasting set of underlying values. We present both approaches in a compelling manner and encourage readers to arrive at their own conclusions regarding which management practices to adopt. The first approach described in each chapter, which we call Mainstream management, is based on the materialist-individualist assumption that effective management is about maximizing productivity, profitability, competitiveness, and other "bottom-line" values. Scholars have long recognized the merits of Mainstream management theory and practice (e.g., it has fostered an unprecedented creation of financial wealth and productivity) but have also noted its shortcomings (e.g., erosion of meaningful work, environmental degradation). We followed a rigorous process to ensure that our book included all the core material found in other leading Mainstream management textbooks." -- Provided by the publisher
