"Breaking Through General Chemistry 1 is part of the enhanced Breaking Through Science series and is intended for Senior High School students in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand

Students have been formally introduced to chemistry in junior high school. As such, Breaking Through General Chemistry I takes off from this introductory background. It presents an extensive coverage of core chemical concepts that lead students to a deeper understanding of the composition, structure, and properties of matter, the quantitative principles, kinetics, and energetics of transformation of matter, and the fundamental concepts of organic chemistry.

The activities are designed to engage students in sharpening their thinking skills through discovery, investigation, analysis, and interpretation of data and information, rather than through memorization and accumulation of facts.

The chapters in the book are divided into lessoris, which may be taken up within one or more class periods depending on the complexity of the topics and the readiness of the students,

Each chapter consists of the following components:

CHEMISTRY CONNECTION-to relate the concepts presented in the chapter with other disciplines and with the real world we live in

KEY CONCEPTS to highlight the main Ideas in the chapter

TEST YOURSELF to serve as a practice examination so that students and instructors will be able to get feedback on which concepts the students have already mastered and which areas they still need to work on

PERFORMANCE TASK to allow the students to apply the skills and knowledge they have learned in various lessons and activities

LEARNING OUTCOMES to provide students with a set of learning expectations at the end of each chapter

Each lesson consists of the following components:

Objectives-to make students conscious of what they need to learn from the lesson

Key Words to provide an overview of the important terms to be learned and understood in the lesson. It also serves as pointers for review.
