"About ten thousand years ago, at the onset of civilization, world religions and belief systems emerged and began to shape human society. In today's world, more than half of humanity's total population practices a major religion, spiritual expression, or indigenous belief tradition. In many countries, including the Philippines, great spiritual traditions and religious beliefs continue to shape the lives of people and play an important role in the different aspects of culture. There is an increasing cultural and ethnic diversity that has led to a variety of faith beliefs or religions practiced side by side. This makes it important for people to understand religions.

It is also not an exaggeration to say that our world and our country is experiencing war, violence, and social disintegration due to religious extremism, fanaticism, and fundamentalism. People are becoming more and more disillusioned and anxious about religious violence. Many are also disconnected from religious ideals and values. This book aims to help readers and learners understand the historical contexts of religions and appreciate their uniqueness and similarities with the goal of promoting mutual awareness, sensitivity, understanding, and respect among believers of different faiths. Each one is called to build an inclusive and diverse environment that promotes mutual understanding and respect. It is our hope that each of you will deeply appreciate your own religious tradition while having an open mind to respect other faith beliefs and practice genuine acceptance and compassion for all.

As you explore the main tenets and practices of major religions, it is encouraged that you read and internalize the sample prayers and religious texts featured in each lesson. These are carefully selected from various faith traditions and speak of love for humankind, peace, justice, healing, mutual understanding, care for the earth, and upholding the dignity of creation. Understanding and appreciating one's faith and that of others will only be possible if you have an open and critical mind, a proactive attitude, and a willing spirit to embrace knowledge about other faiths.
