Summary: "Recent surveys for proposed subjects for the Pediatric Clinics of North America have resulted in Pediatric Ophthalmology becoming the one subject most requested by pediatricians. Pediatric Ophthalmology has become a well-recognized and established subspecialty of ophthalmology. It is an interdisciplinary subspecialty, requiring a close working relationship between the pediatrician, family practitioner, and ophthalmologist. Ocular disorders are of major significance because they often provide clues to the presence not only of systemic diseases but also of other congenital malformations. The recognition, understanding, early treatment, and ultimately prevention of ocular disease in childhood will have lasting and gratifying effects for all physicians who care for the affected children. In this edition of the Pediatric Clinics, a variety of important eye disorders that are essentially confined to childhood are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the importance of a careful clinical evaluation as the prerequisite and essential foundation for the recognition of ocular disorders in childhood. It is my hope that this edition will provide a general understanding of the many areas of pediatric ophthalmology and will be of clinical relevance to all clinicians involved in the care of the pediatric patient." —Foreword
