Summary: "The core of this volume consists of several classic articles by B. F. Skinner. commentaries on those articles by scholars in a variety of disciplines, and Skinner's responses to those commentaries. That core is preceded by a brief introduction to Skinner and his work; it is followed by a summing up - an exchange between Skinner and the editors on some of the major issues raised in the articles, commentaries, and responses. Each "target" article is followed by commentaries arranged in alphabetical order by first author. Skinner's response follows immediately after each commentary, and is distinguished by his initials, BFS, and a change in type size. The affiliations listed for each commentator are those current at the time the commentary was submitted. The volume also includes a bibliography of Skinner's published work, a reference section keyed to the articles and commentaries in which a given reference appears, and name and subject indexes. This project began in a casual way. In 1980, Stevan Harnad, Editor of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (henceforth BBS), had asked me to serve as Associate Editor for the experimental analysis of behavior. At the time when Skinner's research laboratory was still active I had been a graduate student in the Department of Psychology at Harvard, my current research involved work with both human and nonhuman organisms, and I was past editor of the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior. But after the first couple of years of my BBS term I had been singularly unsuccessful in generating new material. My task was to invite or encourage authors to submit works that would eventually become "BBS. treatments": After review for suitability, the papers would be sent out for commentary to scholars in the relevant disciplines and the author would then reply. The issues of BBS usually consisted of several treatments, supplemented occasionally by "continuing commentary" on earlier material. By the spring of 1982, I had reviewed some BBS papers that had been submitted independently of any initiative of mine, but not one of the authors I had suggested had yet come through with a manuscript." —Preface
