Although we do not ignore earlier philosophical thought, we concentrate on that which relates directly to the establishment of psychology as a new and distinct field of study. We recount the history of psychology in terms of its great ideas and schools of thought. Since the formal beginning of the field in 1879, psychology has been defined in a variety of ways as new ideas have captured the loyalty of adherents and have come, for a time, to dominate the field.
