It is necessary to identify the respondents understanding in solving word problems in Basic Algebra. This study was administered to know if students are proficient in Basic Algebra since this is the foundation of Mathematics. The researchers determine the profile of the respondents regarding their age, gender and the type of secondary school graduated, if there is a significant relationship between the respondents profile with their level of proficiency in Basic Algebra. The researchers made use of the descriptive-correlation research design in order to get the proficiency of the respondents. The respondents of this study were the 4th year of Bachelor of Secondary Education of University of Cebu- Banilad Campus. The researchers chose the students who are currently taking Math 14 as respondents of the study. Simple percentage and Chi-Square Test of Independence was being used in this study. The research outcomes revealed that most of the respondents graduated from public schools. Majority of the respondents were females. Furthermore, most of them failed the proficiency exam. The result also revealed that there is no significant relationship between the respondents’ profile with their proficiency in the test except the gender since there are only two (2) males. The research found out that 4th year of Bachelor of Elementary Education students are not proficient in solving word problems in Basic Algebra since only three (3) of the respondents passed the examination.
