"This textbook is intended for capstone courses in "business policy." It features a main-stream, "state of the art" treatment of the concepts and analytical tools of strategic management plus a collection of 37 cases spanning the tasks and problems of managing the total enterprise. To reflect the consensus about course content that has now emerged in the field (despite some nostalgic clinging to the traditional business policy label), we have changed the title of this edition from Strategy and Policy: Concepts and Cases to Strategic Management: Concepts and Cases. There is much more than a symbolic title change involved, though. We have undertaken an expansive, painstaking revision —one that incorporates a far stronger conceptual framework, a wider-ranging set of analytical tech-niques, and 21 new cases. Our objective in preparing the text portion of this edition has been to present a concepts-technique package that puts readers on the frontiers of current knowledge and thinking about strategic management-what it means, what it involves, and how to do a better job of it. In addition, thanks to the solid research and writing of our case contributors, we are fortunate in being able to include a very impressive lineup of cases dealing with the pragmatic aspects of formulating and implementing strategy." —Preface
