"Quorum sensing (QS) is a bacterial communication process that regulates biofilm formation and virulence, with recent research focusing on inhibiting QS to control antibiotic-resistant infections. This study investigates the anti-QS activity of Terminalia catappa fruit extract against Serratia marcescens, an opportunistic pathogen linked to hospital-acquired infections. By exploring the potential of T. catappa fruit extract to inhibit QS-regulated behaviors such as pigment production, this research aims to contribute to the development of alternative antibacterial strategies and reduce reliance on conventional antibiotics. T. catappa fruit extract was obtained using Soxhlet extraction with 95% ethanol, followed by rotary evaporation. MIC and MBC were determined via microdilution. Anti-quorum sensing activity was assessed via 96-well microplate assay. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer post hoc analysis. The extract showed weak antimicrobial and quorum-sensing inhibition against S. marcescens. The MIC was 250 mg/mL with no significant bactericidal effect. At this concentration, the extract inhibited 46.69% of prodigiosin production, indicating moderate QS inhibition. The 4.5% extraction yield suggests limited potency. While previous studies highlight the antibacterial effects of leaf extracts, the fruit extract demonstrated limited efficacy.
