"This study investigated the anticoagulant activity of Artemisia dracunculus to (wild tarragon) leaf extract as a potential natural alternative ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), a widely used but environmentally persistent synthetic anticoagulant. Using methanol extraction via Soxhlet apparatus, the researchers evaluated clotting time and red blood cell morphology of human blood samples treated with the extract, comparing results with EDTA (positive control) and distilled water (negative control). Clotting time was measured using the Lee-White method, and cellular morphology was assessed microscopically through stained and unstained smears. Results showed that the extract had variable anticoagulant activity among samples, with clotting times longer than the negative control but significantly shorter than EDTA. Morphological analysis revealed that the extract preserved red blood cell integrity to some extent but was less effective than EDTA. Statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test indicated no significant difference in anticoagulant activity between the extract and EDTA (p = 0.4497). Despite demonstrating some anticoagulant potential, A. dracunculus leaf extract was concluded to be an inadequate substitute for EDTA in routine hematological applications.
