"Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health challenge, especially in the Philippines where TB incidence remains high, reporting over 500 cases per 100,000 population despite its National Tuberculosis Control Program (NTBCP). This study explores factors influencing TB treatment adherence in San Remigio – a 3rd class municipality in Cebu, Philippines with limited TB-related research. Using thematic analysis, interviews with bacteriologically positive TB patients identified seven key themes: social, economic, knowledge, treatment, self-factor, and healthcare service delivery. Findings indicate that while sex and age do not significantly affect adherence to treatment, social stigma, economic insecurity, treatment side effects, personal motivation, and healthcare service quality are critical barriers. It was evident that stigma associated with TB among non-patients was distinctly influenced by age, with younger individuals significantly more knowledgeable about the illness than older individuals. While participants understood the treatment process, they lacked the knowledge of the names and effects of the prescribed medication. Addressing these multifaceted barriers is thus essential to improve adherence and reduce TB incidence in the region.
