N2  - "The psychometric examinations upon which this work has been based were part of a series of observations of children enrolled from birth for continuing and comprehensive study by the Department of Child Hygiene of the Harvard School of Public Health. This study, as well as the special research organization through which it was carried out, was made possible by a grant from the General Education Board. The periodic psychometric examination of these children was provided for in order to add to existing knowledge as to the variability in the pattern of mental growth as encountered among individuals and as revealed by these tests. It was also expected that they might give evidence as to the influence of environmental and health factors upon the progress of mental growth. It soon became evident that modification of the tests previously described as applicable to young children was necessary as a preliminary step toward accomplishing these objectives. It seemed desirable to construct a uniform testing program applicable to the years under study and comparable with the revised Stanford-Binet test adapted for older children." —Foreword
