"This book is designed to provide the students the necessary instructional materials that would help them learn and understand the basic principles involved in the identification of firearms. This work presents a detailed discussion of the four branches of the study of Ballistics from the time the cartridge was loaded in the firearm, as the bullet leaves the gun, while in its flight, after it hits the target up to the identification of the firearms from which it fired.

The author has observed that very few reference materials involving the study of Ballistics especially authored by local writers are available for students of criminology in the Philippines. Much of the available books which depicts the study of the motions of the projectile are authored by foreign writers and they are not readily available in our bookstores. and if ever they are, the cost is so high that it is not practical for the students to have an individual copy.

This led the author to seek the assistance of some mentors and friends working either in the National Bureau of Investigation or at the Camp Crame Crime Laboratory for the development of this instructional material. This book entitled "An introduction of Ballistics, Firearms Investigation and Identification" was first conceived in 2002. Since then it was used not only by the students of the Philippine College of Criminology but also other criminology schools both in Manila and certain provinces as a reference material not only for classroom discussion but as well as in the preparation of review materials.

The author further enhanced this revised instructional material in order to elicit more the interest of the students as well as the reader by illustrating some diagrams and photographic representation of firearms and ammunition. Towards the end, samples of laboratory reports and some advancement in the field of Forensic Ballistics are presented." —Preface
