520 _aSummary: This study was aimed to correlate knowledge and skills on Basic Life Support among level IV students at University of Cebu- Banilad. This was done in order to determine whether nursing students are already knowledgeable and capable to perform BLS during emergencies. The main theory utilized in this study was the Triarchic Theory of Intelligence by Robert Sternberg. The Problem This study determined the knowledge and skills on Basic Life Support (BLS) of the nursing students enrolled at University of Cebu Banilad, the finding of which was the basis for a proposed seminar. Specifically, this answered the following questions: What is the profile of the respondents in terms of: age, gender, and student's classification? What is the level of knowledge and skills of the level IV nursing students? Is there a significant relationship in the knowledge on Basic Life Support in terms of age, gender and students classification? Is there a significant relationship in the skills on Basic Life Support in terms of age, gender and students classification? Is there a significant relationship between the knowledge and skills on Basic Life Support of the level IV nursing students? Based on the findings, what is the proposed seminar? There is no significant relationship between knowledge and the profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, and students classification. There is no significant relationship between skills and the profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender and student classification. There is no significant relationship between knowledge and performance of skills on Basic Life Support among level IV nursing students. Research Methodology This study utilizes ex post facto design (correlational) research design specifically retrospective. This was conducted in University of Cebu- Banilad campus. The respondents of this study were composed of randomly selected nursing students from level IV. The level IV students' classifications were irregular and regulars. The age bracket ranges from 18-28 years old. The researchers utilized a structured questionnaire taken from the book of Silvestri as the data-gathering instrument in evaluating the students' knowledge. The grade average in the return demonstration on CPR for adults, for infants, and bandaging and transport was used for the evaluation of BLS skills. A sample of 273 respondents was taken from the target population using Sloven's formula. A simple random sampling design was utilized. The treatments of data were as follows: Sloven's formula for the sampling, Chi Square for the relationship between knowledge and skills in terms of the respondents' profile, and Pearson's r for the relationship between knowledge and skills. Summary Findings Based on the results, majority of the respondents were aged 18-20. There is a dominating population of females than males and an overwhelming number of regular students than irregular students. In terms of knowledge on Basic Life Support, the level IV nursing students scored good with grand mean of 2.28. In age, with a computed value of X^2 11.56 and a critical value of X^2 21.03 tested at 0.05 level of significance, the null hypothesis was accepted, therefore there is no significant relationship between knowledge and age. In gender, with a computed value of X^2 1.94 and a critical value of X^2 7.82 tested at 0.05 level of significance, the null hypothesis was accepted, therefore there is no significant relationship between knowledge and gender. In classification, with a computed value of X^2 0.43 and a critical value of X^2 9.49 tested at 0.05 level of significance, the null hypothesis was accepted, therefore there is no significant relationship between skills and age. In skills and gender, with a computed value of X^2 5.40 and a critical value of X^2 9.498 tested at 0.05 level of significance, the null hypothesis was accepted, therefore there is no significant relationship between skills and gender. In skills and classification, with a computed value of X^2 1.45 and a critical value of X^2 9.488 tested at 0.05 level of significance, the null hypothesis was accepted, therefore there is no significant relationship between skills and classification. Conclusion Based on the data gathered, the level IV nursing students have poor level of knowledge, and have a good skill performance. There is no significant relationship between the knowledge and age, gender and classification of the respondents, and there is no significant relationship between skills and gender and classification, however there is a significant relationship between skills and age of the respondents. There is a significant relationship between knowledge and skills of the respondents on Basic Life Support. Recommendations The researchers recommend that the college allot more time for seminar training in BLS in order to improve retention of knowledge ad skills, and that future researchers conduct a follow-up study on this topic.
