520 _a"Thermal physics is the combined study of thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and kinetic theory of gases. This umbrella-subject is typically designed for physics students and functions to provide a general introduction to each of three core heat-related subjects. Other authors, however, define thermal physics loosely as a summation of only thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Thermal physics can be seen as the study of system with larger number of atom, it unites thermodynamics to statistical mechanics. Heat can also transfer, so thermal physics talks about this as well. Touch a metal chair leg, and it feels colder than a wooden desk. But if they're in the same room, and have been there for a while, it's likely that they actually have the same temperature. That's because your hands don't measure temperature; they measure heat transfer. And metals conduct heat particularly fast - the heat in your hand is lost quicker when you touch the metal chair leg, even though the chair leg has the same temperature as the desk. But that's conduction: just one of the types of heat transfer that is studied in thermal physics. The main goal for this book is for students to develop an understanding of the basic concepts of work, heat, and energy and to apply these ideas to various thermodynamics processes and systems." --Backcover
