Fomites are objects that can carry pathogens which can be transmitted to a host. For this study, the fomite that the researchers focused on are coins, which are widely exchanged between different people for their transactions. Since coins get exchanged by various people, the possibility of it coming into contact with dirty hands or even dirty containers is high.
