520 _a"When fundamentals of Financial Management was first published 25 years ago, our intent was to write an introductory finance text that students would find interesting and could truly understand. Fundamentals immediately became the leading undergraduate finance text, and it has maintained that position ever since Our goal with this tenth edition has been to produce a book and ancillary package that not only maintains its lead but also sets a new standard for finance textbooks. By incorporating the latest developments in the fields of finance, education, and publishing into Fundamental and its related ancillaries, we have made the tenth edition the most clear, complete, and integrated learning package available. Finance is an exciting, challenging, and ever-changing discipline. New technology and increased globalization are dramatically transforming financial practices and markets. Over the past few years, we have witnessed a dramatic rise and equally dramatic fall in the stock market, along with the collapses of such giants as Enron, WorldCom, and Global Crossing. Investors, regulators, and law makers are currently scrutinizing the questionable practices of many leading accounting firms, investment banks, and market analysts. Many of these issues are discussed in this tenth edition of Fundamentals, and we explain these events from both a financial and ethical perspective. As the excesses of recent years unwind, it is more important than ever for students to have a solid understanding of basic financial principles. In developing and improving Fundamental, we tried to convey the excitement and ever-changing nature of finance, and to make students realize its importance and relevance. More often than not, students discover that finance is more interesting and relevant than they had anticipated. Nevertheless, finance remains a challenging subject for many students, and we kept this in mind as we developed the text and its sup-porting materials. Without sacrificing rigor, we tried to explain each topic as clearly and completely as possible. One drawback of this approach is that over the years our text has grown ever larger as we added new topics and new features such as spreadsheet presentations, cyber problems, and boxes that illustrate how the various concepts apply to actual companies. After soliciting the opinions of several instructors and students, we found that many felt that parts of the text should be streamlined to make room for new materials. With this in mind, we took steps to shorten the book and thus make it more read-able. In some cases, we shortened the discussion of peripheral topics. In other cases, we moved some of the material to the newly enhanced web site for Fundamentals." -- Preface
