520 _a"21st-Century Literature from the Philippines and the World facilitates the understanding and analysis of literary texts in various genres across cultures. Its overall goal is to help learners gain an increased appreciation of literature from the 21st century and ultimately to inspire them to view the world in a different light-a world where differences are set aside and traditions of the past coexist in harmony with values of the present. It is divided into two main quarters. Quarter One focuses on Philippine literature while Quarter Two features world literature. Each quarter has four units, with four lessons in each. The learning objectives for each lesson are drawn from the learning objectives cited in the K to 12 basic education curriculum guide for the subject. While the overall focus of this book is on 21st-century literary outputs, a historical and developmental approach is adopted in Quarter One to trace the literary development of the country. In this quarter, comparisons are highlighted between regional literary outputs and their equivalent forms in English literature. Representative selections were also chosen through their Intertextual connections. On the other hand, Quarter Two uses a thematic approach. The selections from varied countries worldwide are grouped depending on the themes they underscore. Moreover, the four units in Quarter Two present representative 21st-century literary texts consisting of different genres from these regions of the world: Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America. What both quarters share, however, is the framework in each lesson. Each lesson contains the following components. Learning Objectives contains a list of competencies that the learner will pick up. Introduction discusses the background of the context or history of the specific genre or theme of the lesson. Literary Selections presents the text from the representative genre or region being discussed." —Preface
