520			_a"THE COMPILATION of this dictionary was done during the first six months of 1986. More than 20,000 English words and a few phrases and abbreviations were chosen from various English dictionaries as main entries in this dictionary. Thereafter, until last month, some words and more comprehensive and useful to Filipinos, especially to those studying in colleges an universities, and to teachers, translators and other professionals. This dictionary was originally compiled to serve as the "mother dictionary" of the more than 100 English to Philippine language bilingual dictionaries which I started to compile in 1986 in order to be merged into a single "universal" dictionary of Philippine languages. The compilation of about 140 bilingual dictionaries has been completed and are now being merged. The merged dictionaries, consisting of more than 20 volumes with the title A Universal Dictionary of Philippine Languages, will be published next year, the year 2000. This English-Filipino Dictionary, which is now being published ahead of the universal dictionary, has two principal aims: 1) to encourage and assist Filipinos, especially those who are English-dominant, in shifting linguistically from English to Filipino in their educational, aca demic and professional activities, and 2) to show that Filipino has equivalents for all English words and phrases which Filipinos use, thus giving the lie to the blatantly spurious and egregious claim made by some critics and non-users of Filipino that this language lacks "intellectualization. This claim is obviously false and is nothing but a red herring. For indeed it is the non-knowledgeable and non-user of the language, not the language, that lacks intellectualization. This dictionary is a concrete manifestation of this truism. Finally, it is hoped that this dictionary will succeed in achieving its two most immediate purposes, as follows. First, it is hoped that this dictionary will be used by Filipinos as their dictionary of the English language inasmuch as this dictionary will enable them to understand faster and more clearly and fully the meanings and uses of English words and phrases. Second, it is hoped that this dictionary will serve as a useful guide or model for the compilation of similar bilingual dictionaries in which the source language, i.e. the language which provides the main entries, is English or any other foreign language and the target language is Filipino or any other Philippine language." —Preface
